Obesity

Last week I was talking to a client about weight. In the US, 40% of people are obese and a total of 70% are overweight. That’s astounding!

We were discussing GLP 1’s and how great they are for for many reasons. I’m a firm believer in this medication and how it can literally save people’s lives. As well as the many other benefits of this medication.

She asked me why I thought so many people were overweight now.

I always go back to my grandparent’s eating. Pre 1980’s maybe 1970’s there was zero processed food. ZERO.

People ate eggs, cream, full fat milk, bread, veggies/fruits, meat and fish, potatoes and rice and made everything from scratch.

No preservatives, no fast food, no door dash, no crumble cookie.

The rate of obesity was 13-15%.

This week as I was in a grocery store walking down the cereal aisle, I thought… this is not food. It’s all processed chemicals with very little nutrition. Yet, the labels are screaming otherwise.

People have gotten so far away from eating real food and their bodies reflect this. It’s easier to get something to grab and go rather than make at home. Drive thru’s are really easy and once your taste buds try that food, they are hooked!

I remember seeing the movie Wall-e in 2008 and thinking… that could be a future for our country.

Low and behold, many are living this life. Screens in front of their faces all day, sitting all day and overweight.

It makes me sad to see this.

In the same year as Wall-e, Michael Pollan wrote a book called In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto. His 3 rules of eating are

  1. Eat food

  2. Mostly plants

  3. Not too much

I’d love to hear your thoughts~

Enjoy your day~

When did we stop eating?

This last week I was really sick and went to Urgent Care. The PA who was helping me was nice and we were making small talk as she took some tests on me.

She asked what I did. I told her health coach/personal trainer. She proceeded to grab her belly and said I’ve been trying to lose this for 3 months now.

I asked her if she ate.. and said do you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner?

She admitted that no, she usually waits until she goes home, has dinner and then raids the pantry for the rest of the night.

I told her that no matter what, her body will get the fuel(and sometimes more) than it needs no matter what. Not eating is not helping her. In fact I told her that eating breakfast and lunch would keep her out of the pantry!

She seemed doubtful- but I told her- we all need to eat. You are busy all day in this clinic- your body needs food and your brain needs food too.

Then I dropped the bomb(one of my favorite ones to drop).. I asked her if she thought of herself as a little girl say 11, would she ever not feed that 11 year old all her meals?

She sheepishly said, no of course not. I asked her to treat herself the same way!

It’s very common for me to hear that women power through the day with very little nutrition, then overeat at night which is not shocking.

Saving those calories never works out well and NO ONE is eating apples and broccoli in the pantry- lol!

We all deserve to eat 3X a day every single day. We need the food for focus, clarity, energy just to name a few!

Did you ever skip meals?? I’d love to hear from you! Hit reply and let me know!

I did and it always backfired. Now I eat a good sized breakfast, lunch and dinner and rarely snack or am in the pantry after dinner(now that the kids are out of the house, the pantry has nothing good in it anyway!!).

Your health is your greatest wealth!
