self care

When it really counts

I just stopped by a friend/client’s house today. She had to have back surgery last month, spent a few weeks in rehab and is finally home!

We started working together in November. In between vacations/travel let’s say we’ve been working out 9 months together. Usually 3 times a week for 30 minutes.

Her goals were to be stronger and lose some weight that she had recently put on. She quickly became a friend and a client I loved to see each week.

We focused 90% on strength training and 10% on cardio doing some intervals on the bike. She was a great client and did everything I asked her to do.

She started to feel strong in her own skin, lost weight slowly- 1 lb a month and was doing great- until she had to have surgery.

In rehab, her PT’s were surprised at how strong she is! She told me they were impressed by her leg strength and thanked me for all the squats I made her do- lol!

Seriously though- she was so thankful for her strong body and almost every PT commented on her strength.

We never know what’s going to happen on our health journey. But working on your strength is something that will always benefit you.

Your future self is depending on you to strength train now so you are stronger later and it’s NEVER too late to start!

Need help? Hit reply! I’d love to help you on this journey! With my new app, I can set up training for you no matter where you live or if you belong to a gym or not!

Listen to your body~

In the last week a woman in my area had a stroke. She is 61 years young. She’s active, plays with her grandkids and is a healthy weight. She’s always been a happy woman who never stops moving.

A few weeks ago she had some neck pain that wouldn’t go away. She thought she had slept funny and that was it.

Until it wasn’t. She had a stroke and a week later is still in the ICU.

How many times have you had an ache or pain and thought nothing of it?

I think we have all done this in our lives. A bad night’s sleep or two and you may be achy and chalk any body issues up to that.

Please become the expert on you. Especially as we get older- go get checked out for any pain out of the ordinary.

Another friend has family history of heart disease. After experiencing chest pain throughout the summer, he had a heart catheter put in and 3 stents. He’s lucky he got to the doctor in time.

It’s easy to take your health for granted- I think we all do when we are younger. Our health truly is our greatest wealth.

Listen to what your body is telling you. Get seen asap for anything out of the ordinary. This is your friendly reminder to get the annual physical, go to the dentist and ladies, get your annual appointment with your ob/gyn.

We only get one body to go through this lifetime with- take the best care of it that you possibly can.

Enjoy your day~

When did we stop eating?

This last week I was really sick and went to Urgent Care. The PA who was helping me was nice and we were making small talk as she took some tests on me.

She asked what I did. I told her health coach/personal trainer. She proceeded to grab her belly and said I’ve been trying to lose this for 3 months now.

I asked her if she ate.. and said do you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner?

She admitted that no, she usually waits until she goes home, has dinner and then raids the pantry for the rest of the night.

I told her that no matter what, her body will get the fuel(and sometimes more) than it needs no matter what. Not eating is not helping her. In fact I told her that eating breakfast and lunch would keep her out of the pantry!

She seemed doubtful- but I told her- we all need to eat. You are busy all day in this clinic- your body needs food and your brain needs food too.

Then I dropped the bomb(one of my favorite ones to drop).. I asked her if she thought of herself as a little girl say 11, would she ever not feed that 11 year old all her meals?

She sheepishly said, no of course not. I asked her to treat herself the same way!

It’s very common for me to hear that women power through the day with very little nutrition, then overeat at night which is not shocking.

Saving those calories never works out well and NO ONE is eating apples and broccoli in the pantry- lol!

We all deserve to eat 3X a day every single day. We need the food for focus, clarity, energy just to name a few!

Did you ever skip meals?? I’d love to hear from you! Hit reply and let me know!

I did and it always backfired. Now I eat a good sized breakfast, lunch and dinner and rarely snack or am in the pantry after dinner(now that the kids are out of the house, the pantry has nothing good in it anyway!!).

Suck it up Buttercup

Recently a client was telling me that she wasn’t getting many steps in because she really only likes to hike in nature.

Walking is really one of the best things we can do for our health. Most of the people I follow put walking on the top of the list of things we can do for our mental and physical health every single day. And they recommend 8K as a great number to shoot for which I think is very doable!

It’s easy. You don’t need special clothes. You can do it in the mall in the winters, or in the gym anytime of year. Being outside is a break from technology(if you don’t bring your phone) but breathing fresh air is always good for our bodies and souls.

My reply to my client- suck it up buttercup. I actually don’t care if you like to walk in your neighborhood or not, you just have to do it. She actually lives close to a great bike path with hills and is away from cars which is ideal!

She was a good sport and laughed and said ok I’ll do it.

Sometimes we have to do things that might not be on the top of our list of things we like because they are good enough.

Walk daily. Period. Our bodies are meant to move. Even if you work at an office- get up at least once an hour and walk the long way to the bathroom. Every step counts!
