strength

When it really counts

I just stopped by a friend/client’s house today. She had to have back surgery last month, spent a few weeks in rehab and is finally home!

We started working together in November. In between vacations/travel let’s say we’ve been working out 9 months together. Usually 3 times a week for 30 minutes.

Her goals were to be stronger and lose some weight that she had recently put on. She quickly became a friend and a client I loved to see each week.

We focused 90% on strength training and 10% on cardio doing some intervals on the bike. She was a great client and did everything I asked her to do.

She started to feel strong in her own skin, lost weight slowly- 1 lb a month and was doing great- until she had to have surgery.

In rehab, her PT’s were surprised at how strong she is! She told me they were impressed by her leg strength and thanked me for all the squats I made her do- lol!

Seriously though- she was so thankful for her strong body and almost every PT commented on her strength.

We never know what’s going to happen on our health journey. But working on your strength is something that will always benefit you.

Your future self is depending on you to strength train now so you are stronger later and it’s NEVER too late to start!

PPP- aka Protein Pushing Pam

Some call me protein pushing Pam- I’m ok with that :). As I truly do tell every client I work with to eat more protein!

A few months back I started working with a lovely woman who had put on 10+ lbs and she was frustrated with that. She’s super active going to the gym a few times a week, playing pickle ball a few times a week and walks her dog every day.

My standard question is always, what does your food look like? (insert and eye roll/groan that I don’t see- lol).

In a nutshell, she was very haphazard with her food often skipping lunch and like 100% of my clients didn’t eat nearly enough protein and snacked to make up for missing a meal.

For her first week I had her hit 100g/protein a day and shoot for 25 g of fiber and eat 3 times a day.

No surprise to me but a BIG surprise to her, she lost 3 lbs her first week! She was so FULL and couldn’t believe it!

We just caught up today and she told me she did an experiment. She went back to the way she used to eat- 2X a day with some snacks and felt HORRIBLE!

I of course knew where this was going when she started talking and told her I’m not surprised at all. She needs to eat 3X a day.

Here’s where it was hard for her to wrap her mind around… for decades she’s been hungry(I can relate- trying to eat less for far too many years), she thought being full was a “bad” thing as she’s not been full for years.

Her body told her exactly what she needed. Regular meals with lots of protein, veggies and fruit. She feels really good(and full).

I’m raising my hand here on doing the undereating thing, saving calories etc for too too long. Never ever again will I do that.

Our bodies are highly tuned machines that need fuel on the regular- daily basis.

Have you ever had an A-HA moment about your food?

I’d love to hear it- hit reply and let me know!
