Falling

In the past few weeks 3 people I know of have fallen. All were over 70 and I am happy to say they are all in good spirits now.

One of these women I have known for more than 10 years- she’s a member at my gym.

She’s a regular and I’m happy to report that she strength trains on the regular and I’ve been fortunate enough to speak at a women’s group she’s part of locally.

Today she texted me with a picture of her with a huge black eye. In her words…”I want to thank you for motivating me to get to the gym and not eat carrot sticks all day. I recently fell on cement and split my head open. The ER doctor couldn’t believe I didn’t break something. Weight bearing exercise works! I’m 74 and besides scrapes and bruises I just needed a few stiches.”

I hated hearing she fell obviously but am THRILLED she’s been strength training on the regular! Her body protected her when she needed it the most!

Exercise is so important for so many things. Our future selves depend on us to do it now so that we can feel great later on!

P.S. 2 out of the 3 falls were in slippers/flip flops. Let’s always wear supportive shoes when we leave the house!

When it really counts

I just stopped by a friend/client’s house today. She had to have back surgery last month, spent a few weeks in rehab and is finally home!

We started working together in November. In between vacations/travel let’s say we’ve been working out 9 months together. Usually 3 times a week for 30 minutes.

Her goals were to be stronger and lose some weight that she had recently put on. She quickly became a friend and a client I loved to see each week.

We focused 90% on strength training and 10% on cardio doing some intervals on the bike. She was a great client and did everything I asked her to do.

She started to feel strong in her own skin, lost weight slowly- 1 lb a month and was doing great- until she had to have surgery.

In rehab, her PT’s were surprised at how strong she is! She told me they were impressed by her leg strength and thanked me for all the squats I made her do- lol!

Seriously though- she was so thankful for her strong body and almost every PT commented on her strength.

We never know what’s going to happen on our health journey. But working on your strength is something that will always benefit you.

Your future self is depending on you to strength train now so you are stronger later and it’s NEVER too late to start!
